2024 was a bit of a breakthrough year for me. Rhythm and repetition started to appear strongly in my work. I discovered Dansaekhwa, a South Korean monochrome painting movement from the mid-1970’s, characterized by neutral palettes (white, beige, blue), repetitive gestures, and heavy materiality. Artists like Park Seo-Bo, Lee Ufan, and Ha Chong-Hyun created meditative, abstract works focusing on the process of creation rather than the final product.
I only discovered this by accident, searching the Internet, trying to see if anyone out there was doing what I was doing, or had the same interests in these forms. I was surprised and pleased that a whole group of artists were interested in these forms as much as I was. My take on it still goes back to post-minimal artists, such as Eva Hesse, as I can’t seem to move away from organic and biomorphic shapes.
